Seychelles: Indian tourism market in free fall

09/20/11
________________________________________
The latest figures published by the National Statistics Bureau (NSB) of the Seychelles indicate a performance against the Indian outbound tourism market as almost all other markets were up and contribute to a healthy growth of this sector key of the Seychelles economy.

According to these official statistics released Friday by the NSB, from January 1 toSeptember 11, 2011, only two of the 27 source markets (the Indian subcontinent and Russia) to the Seychellois tourism industry posted declines and this is much more pronounced for the Indian market.

While Russia, a primary market, declined by only 5%, the Indian market (ranked secondary market) has in turn shrinks by 20% over the same period 2010. More over the same period last year, 527 visitors in less than a native of the Indian subcontinent arrived in the Seychelles.

It is unknown the exact cause of this underperformance against the market Indian subcontinent since the National Council of Seychelles Tourism has so far not commented on the origin of this decline and travel agencies specializing in the markets the Indian subcontinent can not be identified.

Tourism is, with the fishing industry, the main source of foreign currency for the Seychelles, island state located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This country of 444 square kilometers receives more tourists per year than its population of 86,000 souls. Compared to the same period of 2010, the tourism industry recorded a growth rate of 12% in the number of arrivals.

The answer is simple. Air Seychelles stopped flying to India sometime this June and we no longer have direct flights. The same think would happen if they stopped flying to South Africa, London or France. This has nothing to do with STB. Blame those who decided to stop India.

What an Indian said is partly right:

It doesn't take a PhD to realize why the Indian tourists are not quieing up to fly to Seychelles now does it?

A few years ago Air Seychelles reduced the comission with its Indian promoters to a minimum thinking they'd still bother to promote Seychelles as a travel destination. Wrong, they naturally said "stuff you and your bloody island".

A mere year or so later Air Seychelles had teh great idea to fly to start flying to Chennai en route to Singapore, another failed strategy which resulted in pure loss and the route being cancelled a mere year after.

Now, despite India being an emerging and growing economy with an ever growing middle class who can afford to go on vacation, their choices of destinations are many withing their own country as India itself is a tourist destination for sun and beach seekers. In addition to that, Indians in general are cheap and stingy and only few would even consider spending money on a vacation to an expensive place like Seychelles which costs more than it tastes unless of course they can stay for free with friends and family. Besides, there are thousands of other nearby destination like Indonesia, Malaysia and not least Thailand where the price level is a fraction of ours.

Besides, as long as that ugly fucker Ramadoss lives here, most Indians will stay clear of Seychelles as they're afraid he'll rob them while they're here. :-D

I do not agree that it is a question of price but of the failure of Pp govenremnt to have long-term strategy and this won't as Michel hold the tourism ministry while knowing nothing about the industry and as to St Ange he seems too not to have any strategy.

Now why is it not a question of price?I will take Switzerland as example ,in the last three t ofour years Indian visitors to Switzerland have seen a rapid growth in arrival making them the number one visitors behind Japs according to swiss statistic. So the problem lies else where and i assume it more a lack of vision, strategic and know-how of pp falied governemnt.
Let us take mALDIVES-maldives has seen a increase of arrival in February total 78 tousands only for the month of Feb 2011.Mauritius 1,3 % percent increase than a year earlier.Sri Lanka a rise of 19.9 in June,Kenya expecting a record of 1,2 million visitors this year, etc etc and etc. This was just to give an insight and for you to compare of how countires are doing while oue tourism industry stagnated and also shows that if other countires are succeeding and we not it is in the first place of bad policies of the governemnt nothing else.

Don't expect Indians to spend money to come to Seychelles. Indians are very cheap people and racist as well. They see us as black and therefore will never bother to spend and come. The reason they go to Switzerland is because they have relatives there; they go to visit them not to visit the country. It is not in their culture to go on holiday. We should focss more on China. Chinese will spend their money to go on holidays.

The problem is S.,Ange and Pp.The former has run uot of ideas the latter completely ignorant of how the industry works. The industry needs in my opinion a qualified teams of men and women with expertise and experience in this filed .dedicated solely to the industry-Mr L DÔffay for instance, has decades of exprience in tourism industry but even someone like Dereck Savy could be part of such a team ,the latter was for years a hotel mamnger but also hold a degree in marketing.Seychelles has potential and people capable to operate an effective tourism board, they must be given the possibility .Michel should rapidly give the ministry to an expert instead of playing an expert while knowing nothing in the indsutry.

Reply to Jeanne:

The strategy is there, but as most strategies with the "Made in Seychelles" stamp, tehy lack fulfilment.

Fault #1: Air Seychelles should have kept the comission of its Indian agents, not reduced them. What made Savy(who was then in charge) think that they would still make Air Seychelles a priority if they were only getting peanuts?

Fault #2: It's too much grenn for an Indian to come to Seychelles without a direct flight. Holidaymakers come with their entire families, including a footbal team of kids. Would you drag yours through transit in Dubai where you'd haev to spend extra cash on shopping, food, drinks etc?

The problem with Seychellois is the mentality thinking that Seychelles is so special and everybody is figthting to get here at any cost. It's not.

Of course the blogger further up has a point regarding racism as Indians are indeed racist and do like bibiks which they see as inferior. Indians will travel to Europe which they love as it is different from their own country. After all, we go on vacation to experience diffference(you don't cross the river to get water).

Someone further up said we should ai for the Chinese. Well, to a certian extent that may be worthwile, but again they too have cheaper and more affordable destination.

Our main problems are 3 things:

1) Price - Too high
2) Value for money - Too low(what the hell is there to see in Seychelles apart from white beaches which one can see anywhere?)
3) Service - Literally non existence unless in a 5+ star accomodation

I remember back in teh early/mid 90s when Seychellois used to go to Mauritius for vacation and boast about the low price and great service there and how they were embarassed sometimes on behalf on how poor the Morisyen were...! Well, that's what attracts tourists.

I recall reading a blog about Seychelles as a tourist destination and the general comment was "beautiful, stunning, but the whole place consists of a bunch of lazy fuckers".

Now that's our problem and even the president said a few years ago that we have to get off our bums.

Just look at the opposition(SNP) who can't get off theirs.

I like the style of this Pete Undaki!

He says what is on his mind and makes a lot of sense. But you don't have to quote someone that insults us as a people. That is not nice and it hurts us.

The communist system made us lazy, it is not how we were..........

Pete Undaki sounds like Gerard Payet by another name.

I thought Air Seychelles flights to India were for the business/working travellers, including people going for medical treatment, not for tourists. I think it would have been rather foolish to expect tourists from India. Air India's flights to/from London are usually full but I do not think the passengers are tourists.

Well thank you for the compliments as I couldn't have put it better myself and I loved the name(PUndaki). Must be another real Indian that one LOL.

That Chennai route seems to have been one bloody nightmare for both HM and its PAX. From what I recall there were delays as the authorities didn't want to give the landing permit as some official over there probably didn't get his share of the bribe. Once started, the route was a nightmare as the Mahe-Singapore route was lenghtened by several hours not to mention all the people coming onboard. No offence to Indians, but those Indian consruction worker expats boarding for Seychelles carried onboard luggage in form of either strong 3 day old sweat and/or cheap sweet smelling perfume or all three scents combined for that matter. I can just imagine the 5-6 hour ordeal having to sit next to or three of these. The next problem was of course the unavailability of tickets due to packed flights making business trips to Sing hard to plan.

Nevertheless, the project was yet another case of a failed and badly planned venture. Good riddance the damn thing was cancelled. I've done the Sing-Sez flight several flights myself and nothign was nicer than the thought of flying straight home.

Someone mentioned the flights being tailored for medical tourism. Wasn' that the whole point of the hospital to be in Victoria? As if Indians with their cheap hospitals would fly to Sez for treatment. I wonder who's brainwave that was.

I cannot help but laugh at two-faced Christopher Gill!
It’s o.k. for him to betray his uncle and godfather for land and money by crossing the floor but it is the act of Judas if somebody else does it?
We are all grown up here and we each can boast some form of education no matter how minimal. We see what is written and can read and understand at least the basics. So tell me somebody which is the worse form of betrayal;
David Pierre deciding to leave SNP?
Jane Carpin deciding to vote with her conscience and getting expelled from her party for it
or:
Christopher Gill betraying his uncle who is also his godfather – the man who stood in church in the presence of god craddling the baby Christopher in his arms and vowed to look after him and guide him and be his father before god – stabbed in the back for the love of money and land! Yet Christopher Gill, unashamedly and without batting an eyelid is calling everyone else Judas. If indeed they are Judas then Christopher Gill is KING JUDAS!
Now he is acting like he is god and asking others to do Hail Marys.
Totof there are not enough Hail Marys on earth and in heaven for you to repeat in order to absolve your sins of betrayel to your uncle and godfather!
How can anyone with even an ounce of education take Christopher Gill seriously?
He is the joker in the deck of political cards – useless and discarded with no value!

I have to loyalty to people that conspire to kill me or do harm to me.

I have no loyalty to those that step on Freedom and the right of Seychellois to be free.

Since we are surrounded by a plethora of sell outs and opportunists, you can expect conflict. That is normal under such a dubious circumstance.
