If a government could live off mistakes and errors, and bad judgment, and that government had a name and a leader it would be: Parti Lepep led by James Michel.
However, the most recent blunder spearheaded by Minister Joel Morgan, has taken a new dimension and it will redefine the word Failure as we know it today. Besides the Coco De Mer in the Guinness Book of World Records, we will see the caption: Biggest Blunder in Paradise Ever. Under that caption, we will read the sale of Air Seychelles to Etihad.
The Sale Compromises Seychelles
Minister Morgan who handles the Transport portfolio handled this transaction with utmost secrecy as if he was handling a deal to pay off some Somalia pirates to free a group of hostages. As he was selling Air Seychelles to Etihad, the Tourism Trade, which includes STB and the SHTA were busy signing up Air Austral to do Three (3) flights a week from Charles De Gaulle and signing up Blue Panorama to breathe life back into the Italian market. Blue Panorama works jointly with Air Italia. Air Austral has pulled out within 48 hours of the announcement of the sale. Emirates is now threatening to pull out according to key sources in the Industry. Qatar may well move on to Mauritius where it is more welcome and handling fees for landing an aircraft is half the price of Seychelles under Minister Morgan.
No Consultation No Vision
By foregoing consultation with the Tourism Trade and the business community, Minister Morgan wore blinders going into the transaction with Etihad. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between him and Etihad has not been disclosed yet, but we understand from international articles, that Etihad will hub all incoming traffic to Seychelles. Hence, we will lose a substantial amount of visitor traffic in 2012 because quite simply, not everyone in the World is dying to hub through Abu Dhabi, UAE on the way to Seychelles. Initial projections indicate a -30% in Visitor arrivals to Seychelles in 2012. This is the disaster we face and it gets worse. Read on.
Minister Morgan Says: “No Swimming on Praslin”
After the shark attack that left Mr. Ian Redman a victim of a Bull Shark, a ban on swimming was placed on Praslin. According to the Natal Shark Board experts, a swim ban must not remain beyond Thirty (30) days. After all the sea is part of our environment, and sharks are parts of the sea.
In the whole world, only 50-100 shark attacks occur each year. Minister Morgan has not removed the ban on swimming until today, a total of Six (6) months. What kind or a person does something like that?
Consequently, since travel agents are not selling Praslin the most beautiful island in the World with Two (2) of the Best Beaches in The World, possibly Four (4) , thanks to Minister Morgan, Praslin Island will suffer an estimated -50% reduction in turnover for the year 2012.
If ever a Minister deserved the Gold Medal for destroying an economy, I would vote for Minister Joe Morgan. Only Minister Faure, for Finance, will be able to tell us in December, what kind of damage Minister Joel Morgan has done to the economy of Seychelles. However, do not blame Minister Morgan alone. The SPPF passed a law in the National Assembly to make each and every single Minister accountable for the all decisions of the Consul of Ministers. It is they, who gave Minister Joel Morgan a free hand at Home Affairs. I would defend him or sack him at this point.
Why did Minister Morgan not lift the ban on swimming? The answer is simple. He was waiting for a zodiac, a tower and a life guard to apply for a job and it took over Six (6) months. He never thought out of the box and send Scully to watch the beach, which is about what he is qualified to do in the first place.
Economic Dire Straits In 2012
People of Seychelles, in 2012, PL will give us every excuse why our economy is not working well. Ignore them. Our economy does not work well because of the PL. Full stop! Business will suffer. Families will suffer. Many will lose their jobs. Our stomachs will boom- boom with air in them. When it does! Remember that Communists never run an economy right. They run only their personal finance right and make sure their pockets are filled to the brim.
The sale of Air Seychelles is the grandest failure yet, of a government that had run out of ideas. The worse thing is, they never offered the People of Seychelles the opportunity to save Air Seychelles. If Captain Adam could raise $100 Million to build Ephelia for himself with our land as mortgage to MCB, we could have doubled the size of Air Seychelles, without Khalifa’s love affair with Seychelles…..let us be clear, Sir, we do not love you. Se Nou Ki Sesel!
Sesel Pou Seselwa!
May God Bless All Freedom Loving Seychellois!
