Tourism Board exceeds projected figures

Jan 03, 2013
As we start 2013, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has congratulated the islands’ Tourism Board for not only achieving, but exceeding, the 7% increase in visitor arrival figures as set for Seychelles at the Tourism Board’s 2011 marketing meeting held at Le Meridien Barbarons Hotel.
“It was at the 2011 December marketing meeting at Le Meridien Barbarons, attended by the Heads of the Tourism Board, members of the islands’ private sector, all the Tourism Board’s overseas directors, and the heads of Ile La Reunion Tourism, that the forecast for the visitor arrival target for 2012 was called. Today, we can all see that the Tourism Board had not only been realistic with their forecast, but that it had proposed a well-calculated plan of action for developing Seychelles tourism when they knew that the main markets for Seychelles were suffering from their own economic difficulties. It is easy to take the efforts of those in the frontline for granted, but when we see what is happening in other tourism destinations, and when we read what the big boys in the regional world of tourism are saying, we must and we should be humble enough to say congratulations to the team at the Tourism Board who have worked hard during 2012,” Minister St.Ange said.
“But as we celebrate as a country on our achievements of 2012, we must also appreciate that the existing public/private sector partnership has brought positive results for Seychelles. The private sector has worked side by side with the government agencies in the promotion of Seychelles, and they have again shown their commitment by coming out last December to work with the Tourism Board on the country’s 2013 marketing plan. I have personally maintained a close working relationship with the private sector and continue to meet their elected representatives on a regular basis,” the Seychelles Minister for Tourism said.
Seychelles is today receiving in visitor arrival numbers well over 2 times its total population and around 5 times its adult working population. These mid-ocean tropical islands with a weather pattern that has given them the name of the tourism destination with a perpetual summer are dependent on their tourism industry. This is why the islands’ Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture is often heard saying that they are not allowed to fail in their work to market the islands and to continue to consolidate the Seychelles tourism industry.
“As we start 2013, my appeal is to the tourism industry as a whole to continue to work as a united team for Seychelles. In so doing, each and everyone will see their respective businesses grow. You have been calling for more funds to go to marketing, and the 2013 government has heard your pleas, and you will continue to be consulted on how we spend these funds that will be operated from an account at a private bank. We understand the need to now gradually increase further the yield from tourism, and we commit to working with the trade as they review their rates they feel is most suited for their respective business,” Minister Alain St.Ange said.
Hotels in Seychelles have always said that they are not competing among themselves, but suffer when price dumping occurs in the region. This is why Seychelles has been playing a leading role in the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organization. They have said over and over again that if the region works as a team, then each and every island of the region will come out as winners.
The Seychelles President, Mr. James Michel, has declared that 2013 will be the year for “Striving for our Seychelles,” in order to reinforce the progress that has been achieved and to overcome the challenges of the continued global recession. The Seychelles President said that the life of a people is defined by the capacity to overcome difficulties, overcome obstacles, without giving up, and that these abilities are what make us stronger as human beings and render us valiant as a people.
President James Michel said as he declared the theme for the islands and that: “Life does not improve by chance. Progress comes from positive changes and hard work. We have to sail away from the coast in order to discover new oceans, new horizons. Have courage. Have belief. Assume our responsibilities…”
The Seychelles President’s message reaffirms the conclusions of the last marketing meeting held at the Hilton Silhouette Labriz Resort and Spa where the private sector trade and the Tourism Board sat together and agreed to move to discover new oceans and new horizons for the country’s tourism industry.
“It was agreed at the 2012 marketing meeting that Seychelles needed to remain proactive and to continue to work on diversification of our island’s tourism markets as we relook at measures to reclaim our fair share of the traditional main markets. It was also agreed that even more needed to be done to keep Seychelles visible in the 4 corners of the world, and here, the Friends of Seychelles in the Press Fraternity will be called upon to assist,” Minister St.Ange said.
Seychelles is a founding member of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP).

Ok, so Arabs, Chinese, Indians, Russians don't like boats. However my friend who owns a fleet of Charter Boats and Glass Bottom Boat tells me otherwise ! It is only a perception that Europeans are the ones who go fishing and excursions. Sorry, we will have to start learning Russians, Arabic, Chinese and Indian if we want to face future challenges. With regards to Maldives and Mauritius getting 1million tourists, good for them. As for Seychelles my views are we should only aim to get a maximum of 400 thousand tourists a year. Having said that the Government should not encourage such scheme as Eden Island as this does not benefit any real Seselwa. It only benefits already rich South Africans. Infact the Government should revoke all guesthouse licenses issued to Eden Island. Eden Island was not originally set up to have mass guest houses !

Alain whom has cross the floor from SNP to PL, are working not only for his family hotel but also for the in-law’s hotels. Alain who happens to be a racist personally hates Arabs but loves their money, isn’t that right blanc zako baboon ?

Greed is evil sadly this is what our Government are made of. Our millionaire priest is another disappointment, he use the word of Lord to lure his victims, corrupt to the core. What he doesn't know, that his followers has now seen his true colours and are talking about it, and in limbo as to where to go. Really if anyone cannot see that SNP is now SNPL, well we at SFP feel sorry for ya.

January 6, 2013 11:14 PM"

People with evil inside their hearts are pitiful, vulgar is the only way they know how.

I just finish Skipping with my niece and cousin who are holidaying in the Seychelles.

This little Island hold forever its beauty but sadly Christianity are slowly dying. SAD BUT TRUE!

The question my 15 years old niece asked me should we bring God into politics??

The question seems has never had to occur in the minds of red parasites who invaded our "JOIE DE VIVRE"...

For thirty six years we have been blinded and labelled as fools. WHY?
Why did we let it get this far? Did we forget about gathering our communities and pray together as a group? Did we? Is it ever too too late gathering our people together to speak about our difficulties and to bring God into our struggle?

Does vulgar and insults help? My personal opinion I would say; it does not, it pushes people further away into the arms of Arabs and their belief, sadly our Christianity are slowing dying. We were invaded by red parasites now we are invaded by Arabs who wants to change our ways of living and belief.

Those who are living in Seychelles cannot always rely on the church alone, we have to take it upon ourselves to gather together, sharing our problems, gives our support to one another.

In Seychelles; arrogance has crept into the minds of every powerful politicians (I was hoping that SFP would be different, unfortunately Mr Tall and Mr Wong are poisoning SFP reputation with their vulgar and insults)I hope and pray that Mr Gill does not turn out like them.

In most cases it is our arrogance that expels the idea of God. This, you must first understand before you begin to answer the question..Most human beings that rise to power among other human beings seem to view themselves as God. By viewing oneself as God, obviously the God we are talking about has no place… He is none existent.

The question now stands..... Should God play a role in politics? I believe that the answer is yes. Whole heartedly I do. Of course my answer is based off of mere opinion, but I’m sure many others seeing everything going on in the world and in this country, shall full heartedly agree…We, as the people of Seychelles, need to realize and accept that we are very, very small in this Universe… We shall always be the inferior. There is a supreme being that created the Universe and that dictates all activity… With this realization and acceptance, we can completely eliminate arrogance. Some may believe that arrogance is necessary to a good leader….. I disagree. Arrogance corrupts a leader… It corrupts anybody. When a leader is arrogant, as in everyone else as well, they begin to create the world for only themselves, and not their fellow human beings. We are all one, and arrogance has a master plan to eradicate that idea from the only good politicians we have left. That is not many, I assure you.

In my conclusion I acknowledge that everybody, primarily people in politics, should now realize and accept that we are "under God" as said in the pledge of allegiance. God should most definitely play a role in politics. Inevitably he is our superior. We are inferior to him. Arrogance is the curse that likes to stick around. We can and must exile arrogance, by accepting God into our way of government, and overall, civilization.

Finally Mr Tall I have also followed you on twitter, and I truly believe that you would have been a great inspiration to all of us if you cut out the arrogance and insults. Meanwhile I will keep on praying for you.

St. Ange is advocating a foolish policy of diversification of Tourism Market when we have not even the marketing budget to promote Seychelles in the existing markets.

If it was St. Ange calling the shots we would all say he is indeed foolish.

But the reality is that St. Ange is trying to swim in currents that flow in a direction wherein Seychelles Tourism is only an incident of the current objective.

I am of course referring to Etihad scheme to use Air Seychelles to open new routes for Etihad, at the expense of closing traditional routes that Seychelles Bread and butter relies on.

The 200,000 arrivals are dubious at best. Military personnel are counted as arrivals. GOP workers and non GOP workers are counted as arrivals. The carnival people we pay to come here are counted in that number. So was the Routes Africa arrivals, whih STB footed the bill for. We need to be factual and face our reality for what it is.

From there, we can develop sound plans for growth, and put the poems aside to fool the people when we are under performing.

Finally, what adds to this morass, is the reliance on GOP workers to do our work. This results in substantial amount of revenue lost by Seychelles, to achieve any bottom line.

What will government do to change our people's perception of work and service?

"Seselwa pa pou tir kaka touris" as Albert Rene said, is still in many people's minds.

Undo that mindset, Seychelles can start to think about accelerated growth.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year, and ask that we all do what is best for Seychelles and the Seychellois people in 2013, stop trying to fool us.

We will not be fooled!

Mr Tall is still ambassador of SFP on a volunteer basis. Regardless of his differences an ambassador should always portray his party and country into a positive and polite manner…
I believe Mr Tall strive for justice and freedom for the Seychelles I have no doubt about that; but are the insults necessary? Hence we must understand the basics of good public relation and at times be prepared to answer difficult questions without insults.
The key role of Mr Tall is to educate those who has been brainwashed by PL, and also to contact and meet with other ambassadors, including political leaders, to discuss our country's shared interests and find solution to the problems in our country. (No complaint there, he is doing an excellent job) what I am not happy about is ‘pour un oui ou pour un non” he breaks into a rage and insults anyone with a different outlook differ from his own. Mr Wong who was meant to be a well-educated man and now a doctor, has also joined into insulting others and make them feel small.
Anyhow I will end here as I do not want to lose track of Mr Saint Ange deplorable and unfair work in tourism. WORK FOR THE WELFARE OF OUR COUNTRY MR SAINT ANGE, STOP BEING A STODGE!

MIDDLE EAST TOURISTS PREFER EUROPE AND ASIA FOR THEIR HOLIDAYS.

Saturday, Dec 22, 2012

Dubai:

The Christmas and New Year holiday season is upon us and is most certainly leading to the annual holiday travel rush.

And when it comes to seasonal holidays and winter breaks, most travellers look at the southern hemisphere while some travellers also consider cold destinations — where children can play with snow, airline officials and travel analysts say.

Airlines have been promoting various destinations with attractive offers since the beginning of December to attract seasonal travellers during Christmas and New Year.

A large number of UAE residents fly out to new destinations just to take a break from the regular life.

“The destinations chosen vary based on the type of customer segment — from home country visits, leisure trips to visiting friends and relatives…Emirates has offered attractive fares to all segments to enable customers to travel more often,” Badr Abbas, Emirates’s vice-president, Commercial, UAE, told Gulf News.

“The most popular destinations are Bangkok, London, Vietnam, the GCC destinations, Amsterdam. Emirates is showing approximately 50 per cent growth in bookings this time over last year for all these destinations.”

Many travellers also go to Istanbul and other Turkish cities. Due to turmoil, a lot of people are not travelling to Levant destinations. However, for budget travellers, some European and Central Asian cities are becoming more affordable — such as Athens, Baku and a few others — thanks to the expansion of Air Arabia and FlyDubai’s networks. Due to this factor, more and more people are going to fly a lot more in the coming years.

“Warmer destinations like Seychelles and Maldives indicate a lesser demand compared to last year,” he said.

Most of the vibrant demand is for home country visits by expatriate workers in the UAE followed by, visiting friends and relatives and then follows traditional leisure destinations like Vietnam, London and Bangkok, he said.

“Depending on the type of trip, the duration varies from a week to couple of weeks,” Abbas said.

However, gone are the days when people used to queue up at the travel agent’s office to discuss travel options and take tips. Now all that is available online at the click of a mouse.

Most travellers no longer depend on travel agents to tell them where they should be flying. With the spread of the internet, online portals offer competitive rates of tickets and hotel or apartments and car rentals that beat the rates offered by travel agents.

“Besides, if you have a GPS or access to Google Earth or Maps and various travel apps, you really do not need any extra help to get by,” said a Dubai-based professional who flies frequently. “Wherever I travel on work, I take a day’s break and go on sight-seeing on my own. You really can travel on your own, if you have the necessary tools.”

That was St Ange praising himself, like all PP likes doing, but you have noted None in the tourism industry praised him.

We could also ask St Ange, where is those Tourists from South America?

There is only one way forward should we have tourists arrival like Maldives,Mauritius, and other countries in the region that is by simply getting our National Airline operate direct flight from Europe.St Ange and PP ahve been trying to tell us ,that since the fiancail crisis EUROEPAN have stopped traveling.Sure there is a cirsis as it is also true that in fact EUROPEANs are still the most traveled nations in the world, even in this fiancail crisis.Proof, the record oftourists arrival in Mauritius,Maldives and others proved that.

Arab countires will never be able to provide or repaLCE EUROPEANs and that for many reasons--1)Travelling is not a cultural thing in arab cultures 2)those arabs who travel are only of a handful mostly rich who often booked package hoiliday thus all paid in advanceaborad(Financial leakage9which in return does not produce revenues to our country,3)Arabs as a blogger put it,are not those kinds of toursits to go on fishing trips, diving, charter boats for barbecues,go in bar,in a disco ,in pubs etc....thus other busisnesses who depend on tourisms like restaurants, pubs etc... do not benefit(sustainable tourism).

In the closing,75 -80 percents of tourisits arrival have always been from Europe thus to gettourism industry back on track it is clear that direct flgihts is the only means to regain those European back on our shores.

SEYCHELLES GOVERNMENT DEPENDS ON LOANS FROM INDIA TO IMPORT FOOD AND MEDICATION.

PUNE: Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has extended $29 million lines of credit to Seychelles and Senegal for financing import of goods and services from India.

The lines of credit agreements were recently signed in New Delhi by T C A Ranganathan, chairman and managing director on behalf of Exim Bank and Pierre Laporte, minister of finance, government of Seychelles and Amadou Moustapha DIOUF, ambassador of Senegal to Indial.

Exim Bank's lines of credits afford a risk-free, non-recourse export financing option to Indian exporters.

Besides promoting India's exports, its lines of credit enable demonstration of Indian expertise and project execution capabilities in emerging markets.

The lines of credit of $10 million extended to the government of Seychelles is for financing import of goods and services from India for specific projects funded by Development Bank of Seychelles.

This is the third lines of credit extended by Exim Bank to Seychelles. The first for $5 million was extended to Seychelles Marketing Board [SMB] on commercial terms and second of $8 million was extended at the behest of the Government of India, taking the total value to USD 23 million. The lines of credit have supported supply of vehicles, medicines and food items.

The lines of credit extended to the Government of Senegalis is the tenth one. The earlier nine for an agregate value of $145.45 million were extended to the Government of Senegal for financing purchase of agricultural machinery and equipment, supply of buses and spares, irrigation project, women poverty alleviation programme and acquisition of vehicles, IT training project, acquisition of railway coaches and locomotives, rural Electrification project and fishing industry development, medical equipments, furniture and procurement of pumping equipment and crane trucks.

St Ange used the Seychelles Tourism Ambassadors around the world to boost-launch his tourism scheme and now those Ambassadors are not ever mentioned in his grand self-praising speeches. But he forgets that when Satellites start to tumble in space, they usually burn on re-entry in earth atmosphere. All signs are there that St Ange has started to tumble, even as he tries to joggle with the tourism and carnival statistics. The Seychelles Tourism Ambassadors will soon be asked to prepare for a soft landing for the debris!

St Ange is like a comic figure. On one hand he acknowledge the fact that our main market is Europe,on the other hand he tries to make us beleive that the reason we having less Euroepan arrivals is because of the ifanacail crisis in Europe. The fact is Both Maldives and Mauritius record aarrivals this year 2012,)5 percents of visitors they ahd are madfe of Europeans.

St Ange failed to recognize that the real reason for the decrease in Euroepan arrival is cause by the lack of Di4rect flghits from Europe.St Ange might tell us "But Maldives has no Nat.Airlines?Ture? But Maldives on the contrary to St Ange has made deals with Airlines like BelAir,EdelWIESS ,Virgin etc... those comapnies are operarting direct flights from Europe to Maldives. And waht is clear,if St Ange failedto recognize this fact,2013 Maldives ;amuritius,Sri Lnaka and others will again bit us though Seychelles compare to her beauty should be atracting more oturists or at least the same qouta as those countries.Even ,Mauritian Son writer called Seychelles as "Bijou de L' Océan Indien"only St Ange and PP gansters do not get that .

This is my first time on this blog, however i took the time to read through a lot of what people had to say and i find it sad that we are acting like we were in the 60's when SPUP and DEMOKRATIK supporters use to kill each other for the sake of politics. It seems in those days people associated themselves with their favorite colour and not what the policies of the parties meant to the nation as a whole.
Today, with all this abundance of education and hitech lifestyle, we should be better prepared to disseminate and digest whatever information or pieces of legislation that is thrown at us.
With the accessibility of various world bodies such as the UN and the Commonwealth to which Seychelles is a signatory, we should by all means be able to ask our authorities to live up to the standards of their pacts.
However, what is apparent here is that people are still trying to kill each other with insults without really deeply looking at the foundation of their arguments. This is sad, because it is not conducive to generating fruitful debates and thus educated responses that can push our nation forward. It is not creating an environment of intelligent dialogues for the betterment of existing structures.
Nonetheless, i find that not all bloggers are as bad as others. Some backs up their claims with records such as publications and archived records. This shows a good level of prominence and credibility.
Finally, i wish that we could all start by respecting each others political opinion. By respect, we show tolerance and thereby accepting that we are all different but share the same common fabric. This is important as a new departure since we all seem to be so lost and out of touch with reality.

Stop your nonse and let us pseak about the real issue.
For instance,on Pp's economic drill sergeant Laporte ,who tells us that tour economy is on the right track. But let us check the figures he gave us"3 percent of GDP growth and 5.8 percent(or around it up 6 percent inflation (thus infaltion is higher than GDP growth)which in economic term means a RECEESION.

Acountry is considered to be in growth path if YEAR on YEAR GDP% growth is higher than Inflation % growth, overwise infaltion eat into the growth.

Laporte used nomimal GDp growth to calcutate the ifgures he gave us.Hnece, using nominal gdp growth is a very bad measurement to calculate gdp growth, for even when there is no gorwth in genuine output of the market ,it gives you the imprssion there is one.

So laporte is fooling seselwa.
