"Another Public Safety Tragedy Under Minister St. Ange (Tourism) and Minister Morgan (Public Safety) "

Dubai journalist killed in Seychelles boat accident

Feb 9, 2013

DUBAI// A radio journalist with the Dubai Eye station has been killed and a British colleague injured in a boat accident in Seychelles.
Rebecca Davidson, 35, deputy head of programming and news at Dubai Eye, died after her boat collided with another vessel at 9.30pm in the channel between the main island of Mahe and Sainte Anne Island.
Ms Davidson, from New Zealand, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Seychelles Hospital. Her colleague, Lucy Taylor, a news editor at the station, was injured. The station said the Briton's condition was stable. The two journalists were on a press trip to cover the third Seychelles annual carnival. Three other people were on the same boat and were treated for injuries.
Steve Smith, chief operating officer at Arabian Radio Network (ARN), which owns Dubai Eye, said: "This is terrible news. They were on a standard press trip. Both were involved in the accident. Unfortunately, Rebecca was killed. Lucy, although injured, is doing okay. We have been in touch with her."
Mr Smith said the station had been informed of the accident last night and they had notified the families of the two women. He said details of whether Ms Davidson's body would be flown to Dubai or her home country were still being worked out.
Ms Davidson has worked for Dubai Eye for two years, while Ms Taylor has been with them for more than two years.
A statement from ARN said: "Rebecca was a wonderful individual who was full of life, admired hugely by her colleagues and well loved by all who knew her. Rebecca was on a press trip to the Seychelles to gather stories for the station in her own unique and innovative style."
Mahmoud al Rasheed, ARN General Manager, said “We are one family at ARN and all of us would like to send our condolences to the family of Rebecca. She will be greatly missed by the entire team at ARN.”
The Seychelles ministry for tourism said: "A boat travelling to Sainte Anne Island with five foreign visitors and staff of the island resort collided with another boat coming from Cerf Island en route to Mahe with only the skipper onboard, which resulted in a serious accident."
The statement said Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration had begun an investigation to find out the exact cause of the accident. Simultaneously, Seychelles police have also launched an investigation into the incident.
"It is deeply regrettable that this tragedy has taken place, and we are ensuring that a full investigation is carried out", said Joel Morgan, the Minister for Home Affairs and Transport. "The safety of passengers using ferries between the islands is of paramount importance for our islands, and such accidents are rare.
"The investigation will reveal the exact causes of the collision and will enable the authorities to take appropriate action."
The Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St. Ange, and Mr Morgan met with the four visitors at the Seychelles Hospital immediately following the accident to provide necessary support.

A former TVNZ journalist has been killed in a boat accident near the Seychelles.
Rebecca Davidson, 35, was one of five people travelling on a boat between the main island of Mahe and an outlying resort island when it collided with another vessel.
Davidson, who had been in the popular tourist destination on assignment for Dubai Eye Radio, was pronounced dead on arrival at Seychelles Hospital.
Four other people were taken to the hospital for examination and one, a British national, was admitted and is in a stable condition.
The Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration and Seychelles police are investigating the incident. Seychelles is situated 1500km off the coast of mainland Africa.
In a statement, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St. Ange, and the Minister for Home Affairs and Transport, Joel Morgan, said they met with the four visitors at the Seychelles Hospital immediately following the accident.
Mr St. Ange said: "We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Rebecca Davidson. We are saddened by the loss of the life of Rebecca, and the trauma suffered by everyone else onboard. We are doing everything to provide support to the affected passengers and their families."
Mr Morgan said:"It is deeply regrettable that this tragedy has taken place, and we are ensuring that a full investigation is carried out. The safety of passengers using ferries between the islands is of paramount importance for our islands, and such accidents are rare. The investigation will reveal the exact causes of the collision and will enable the authorities to take appropriate action."
Davidson studied communication at AUT University. She went on to work for TVNZ as a journalist and producer for One News and Breakfast.

How many more victims should be Before Dr Morgan and PP get things done.It is not the first time Toruists are being Killed remember the Swiss National killed in a car accident a REEF Hotel too,Morgan though all those cases, remains passive ,unable to bring soltuons. This is a bad publicity for our country, that in a small country so much accident can happened is clear that it is a problem of safety, quality of orads, signals, and how dirviing is taught in Seychelles.Aprt to that, must be added driving under Alcohol or other subtances is also a cause of the increase of accident on our roads, and to it the type of vehicles.some are too big ,do not fits for our roads as alos a lack of police patrol and their inability to make drivers respect driving codes and habits.

Take your responsibility Morgan or quit!Where would we end under Pp thugocarcy ?

Not only Morgan and St Ange the whole lot of those of them need to step down. They already have made Seychelles a joke by having a festival while begging for charity aboard. They have fail the people over and over again, lawless country everyone do as they please and innocent are being victimised.

Boat driver was on alcohol and heroin!

ok Drunk and stone boat driver. Where is the coast Guard between Mahe and St Anne Island?

Same thing with the shark attacks victim, government said, they were swimming and yet there was no life guard around at the time.

The reality is this area is not monitored by Public Safety on the seas yet, it is like Orchard Road for traffic.

Morgan and St. Ange have some explaining to do.

GOS faces liability lawsuit as well, since St. Ange and STB likely lured all journalists to St. Anne island off Mahe so they do not access the public.

Anonymous said...

Before the shark attacks, there were no life guards on duty any where, except for Beau Vallon.

Then we had the attacks.

Now we see people being killed on boats between Mahe and St. Ange.

For Christ sake, get some patrols by coast guard out there.

How many more people will be killed by reckless boaters before you do something about it?

St Ange is guilty. He has already said the carnival was a success, ignore the death and injuries. JJ spirit wins best float, political organisations are not allowed in carnival. JJ spirit spent over one million rupes on the float instead of giving money to disaster relief fund, then give the PRIZE MONEY to the relief fund. Judging was fixed to allow JJ spirit to make political donation. Foreign journalists paid and forced to attend carnival will now check carefully what they are being offered. They cannot write that Seychelles is safe for tourists when they are being killed. St Ange was getting the crowd to shout that they want carnival but the response was low. The world is talking about the Rio Carnival. St Ange's carnival wasted our money.

Turning failure into success is an essential skill of incompetents anbd has been a tradition in the PP and its followers.St Ange considers having foreigners dancing in the streets is a success ,while Seychellois think ,a successful Carnival would be the one that puts Seychellois values at the front and generate revenues for it would attracts more tourists(like Brazilain or Venician Carnival);that is the main reason for holding a Carnival , showing the world whole we are, our Heritage and traditions. But this unfortuantely does not exist in St Ange Carnival,in fact his Carnival is a lost for the country both fiancially and touristically.

St Ange think when he calls it a success then it become automatically a success ,by magic spells become a successs. You can understand why PP failed us.when people confuse success from failure ,there is no hope that things can be better,it can only get worse. And PP is a physical proof of that.

Sechelles Seychelles Freedom party and its visitors we are not in the crapping game - the American word crapping.

Some 20 years ago when then Minister James Michel son got involved in the big mess and later his other son with the Drug issues.

We have children too and that SIROP program - what they did to our persona as children and what we have become today. In turn our children.

President FA Rene view was that you put those children in Military camps and the such they many just learn something.

He ought to know better about our person we talked with him very many times in our Youth.

Having worked and involved in Grass Root and voluntary sectors of Britain and EU workings our knowledge and experiences - yet those children of ours. Would it have helped or better if we were Priest.

Just by change had we gone on as a Minister our children - how we would have had to answer to the greater public and our person. - let alone our current high responsible in term of Interdisciplinary management. - Events and announcement in Rome/Vatican.
IN as much we have very many British Friends - it was a very good thing that President choose to rid Seychelles of the English - we have a very good reason for stating this. Like Mr Gerrard Hoareau we could get buried in English soil; and the crap and lies you would be told.

We are not in the business of crapping. Some 40 years ago we were among those first Seychellois breeding Saddle back and then Mr St Ange Brother and Mr Morgan, our old fashion way of breeding pigs. WE had called on the ?Vet Dept to castrate our main boar upon their recommendation and that same evening it/he died.

Those of you who are saying that there was no rain at the Carnaval was a good sign - quote by Minister Alan St Ange. Take some time study what a Saddle Back is all about thenc0me and quote Minister St Ange and the Pope resignation .

Dear Friends and good People,

Please do not forget that Pope Benedict was the number Two of Pope John Paul ll, the mega changes in the COMECON, Poland, USSR, Germany and the rest of the world we have not addressed and written about. Those of you who thought then President FA Rene Military connections and Network was something you could just walk over - even the Pentagon, the CIA and the White House were scared, the great French and British Institutions - so please be very careful what you write about the Vatican. what we have addressed the past 21 years and those of you practicing Catholic what we can/allowed to share in greater public and not.

Please try and treat this subject with m ore tact, think of our won church, Families, children and Ancestors and our future however mad and very angry we are.

How many of you recall the British resignation of the archbishop of Canterbury those who at all cost cost wanted a Black archbishop of Canterbury,. the mega hype and the mechanism at work/play/involved and used, being applied - what we were compel to write in public and in the end those who listen to our advice.

We have a situation - those from Google and other social Network and Facebook who want to help elect the next Bishop of Rome /Pope - we tell them little do they know to be the next Bishop of Rome you do not have to care about the $ trillions and all the gold mines and diamonds mine of the world.

This said Google and the social Network advocacy of the next Bishop of Rome - We want o ask that Ghanian Cardinal - how much doe he know of our person - without our direct involvement the duplicate of St Peter basilica would not have been build in Africa.

Second what we have written about the EU institutions and OAU - where would OAU be today had we not got involved in the issue of African Union.

That same Bishop ought to know other greater workings of Vatican and related issues.

We have addressed above that Pope Benedict was the number two of Pope John Paul ll

We were educated in Seminar the White Brothers and President FA Rene and that Church at Anse Boileau we have been on about the past seven days and the development in Vatican - we are sharing those issue in public because President FA Rene fail to share what he learn as a seminarist. The greater Catholic Communities in Sechelles Seychelles who know so very little and do not wish to know more.

On the boat accident

PP will tell us that an investigation is underway as in all cases, but as in all cases there would never be an outcome.

TAZAR soldier attacked by GURKAS
LUCAS still in hiding.

Car accident that killed Swiss National at Pointe Larue.

Unborn babies being butchered by Mitsy,no investigation,PP is even totally silent on the issue as if it does not exist.

Irregularities in Pp ministry shortly Health minister and over ministries.etc..etc..etc..etc..

In a word, investigation under PP last for eternity ,it never ended thus no conclusion.

It is rare but there has been resignation in the 2000 history< of the Catholic church. In 1415,for instance,,POPE Gregory XII resigned.
The so called CANON LAW of the Catholic Church mentions Papal resignation CANON 332.Thus ,A POPE can resing at his own will, though it is unsual.

The story is about a young NZ journalist who lost her life while doing her job. She should not be dragged politic. Shame on y'all.

Reply to last comment.

Because there is improper public safety in Seychelles, every once in a while some one dies.

This is why we sound the bells.

Do you want us to stay silent after people become victims over and over again and again because a regime cares more about money then the safety of its people and visitors.

The suggestion that the journalist lost her life doing her job is laughable. She was not in a war zone. She had just stepped from the docks of a 5 star hotel and entered a 5 star ferry to go to a 5 star cocktail and dinner .

Under PP there is"no rule of the road at sea" as we donot have on our roads, and no organized and professional Marine police too.Maybe ,it would be time to introduct obligatory sailing licence for Boats owners, especially private, just like on land for cars etc.

Admiral Morgan should take his responsilibity and stop finding scapegoats to put the blame on.

The Ball is now in Admiral Morgan court.

You right we donot expect PP thugs to punish one of theirs.Knowing Michel records in butchering, one may ask, could it be that Michel too afraid that Al Jazeera journalists might be here to once expose them ,that Michel order and silumate an accident to intimidate the those journalists?

Maybe,Michel thought they were going to Ste Anne to film Francis Five star hotel built with stolen tax payers money as apart of their reports on corruption in Africa.

After LUCAS`case ,the butcher does not feel secure and safe,Afraid he is expose too,he is ready to exterminate all those that report against Him,including foreign journalists.

The boats had no lights.

The Beachcomber group were aware of this.

The Cerf Island Resort had even written complaints of their skipper driving the boat in a reckless manner in the past.

There is no Public Safety patrolling in this area just between Mahe and St. Anne. That in itself, is incredible negligence by Government of Seychelles.

Anonymous said...

Alain, someone died. You invited them, you were responsible for their safety not just making sure they had a good time. The tragedy tarnished the carnival. Resign and take responsibility.

Anonymous said...

Does the guy operating Cerf island boat has any sailing training, and know-hows needed at sea?Was he under substance influence? How fast was here sialing ,that it resulted in the death of that lady?

I do not know if St Ange as Tourism minister should resign, but Morgan minister of Transport should, and that immedaitely.

Pp you can try and put a electronic baord with speed limit writen on it reduce speed 10 or 20 km togethere with a camera that flash like on the road to catch any one speeding.St Anne to the port and you can use solar energy to make it work 24 on 24 and fine any one who is speeding and breaking the law and this flash borad can flash day and night. This kind of thinking^Pp crooks dont have in their heads they just after foreigners euros and dollars instead of putting safety first and order on land and on sea.

In SFP previous article"Chaos reings in Seychelles" ,Chris asked this simply question"where are (SEYCHELLOIS INTELLECUALS(,why are they silent in the eye of Chaos?

We know a handful of them to the likes of RAM,BOULLE--without committment or obligation to something other than the pursuit of happiness through greed or without some sacrifice of personal interest. But where areall the others?

It is said that the voice of the people is the voice of GOD(Vox POPULI,VOX DEI).But silence is no way to communicate with niether the oppressed nor the the oppressors.Silence is never the privilege of intellectulas, silence is the one of the few privilege of the persecuted, the victimized ,voiceless, not that of intellectuals.

The intellectual has the moral responsibility to speak for the silenced,to think,to imagine.to crearte and to envision, and have the duty to give back to the people ,who have been dispossessed not only from material things but from the human dignity.

The silent Seychellois intellectuals are missing the point.it is a privilege, not a durben,to a voice of the voiceless,as it is a priceless gift and honor to be speak truth to power on behalf of the powerless.

The intellectuals Like (P CHOW etc..)have the responsibility not only to make moral committment but also to act on them.In other words, when one commits oneself to a cause, one must accept the fact that the pursuit and fulfillment of that cause will invovle a measure of sacrifice of one's self-interst.

The examples Sey.Intellectuals are setting toady are disappointed and discouraging,to put it charitably. The message they telegraph to the people and young generation in unmistakable:when faced with the arrogant of power,be submissive. When you can ask questions, seal your lips. When face with truth, turn a blind eye and deaf aer. When you can speak truth to power, forever hold your peace.

Silence is not golden, silence is a silent Killer. For all those intelectuals who have chosen to stay silent in the face of the inflicting damage of our people, remeber those wrods from M.L King"In the end ,we will remmeber not the owrds of our enemies, but the silent of our friends"

Seychellois intellectulas must take their mral responsibility,by speaking the turth to power, that is waht inteleelctuals should do.S
