INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY

PRESS RELEASE

 

This Labour Day celebration is about each and every one of you hard working people and the valuable contributions you all make to the common good of our society.  On this auspicious occasion, you are reminded of the fact that this day is a result of the struggle against undervalued and discrimination of workers, unemployment, and all forms of social injustice and social integrity.

In this time of the unprecedented health and deep economic crisis emanated from the consequences of the covid-19 pandemic with heavy and inevitably immediate toll on the fragile workforce of our country, the National Executive Committee of the Seychelles Labour Union and I personally, salute the demonstrated courage and devotion of all our essential and other workers who continue to work and being exposed to the corona virus every day in their work place.

We commend all of you who despite your wages and incomes are none satisfactory, you still find the courage and hope to consistently show up to work.  We commend those of you who despite the shortage of adequate resources in your work place, where you still manage to show up to work. We commend all of you who have to deal with workplace victimization, discrimination, harassment and a hostile work environment you still have pizzazz to show up to work. 

During this time of economic uncertainty, our sincere heartfelt sympathy goes to all single mothers who struggle financially and feel pressured to support their kids. We also recognize and acknowledge the predicament of our youths being denied job opportunities and encountering difficulties in entering and remaining in labour market.

The Seychelles Labour Union evokes the remark of the late Nelson Mandela who articulates that “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice.” The Seychelles Labour Union stands firm as a springboard and an inexorable voice to all of you who have been made redundant and unfairly dismissed. We share your fear and endure the untimely changes in your wages and incomes.

 

The Seychelles Labour Union will employ all resources in its possession to continue to work in good faith with all our partners not only to ensure better wages and working benefits, but for better accountability and responsibility at all levels of the employment structure and sectors and simultaneously promoting a culture of collective ownership and bargaining.

This auspicious occasion equally commemorate your daily struggle against the depreciation of your labour and other forms of injustices you experience in certain workplaces and also your devotion to work.

The National Executive Committee of the Seychelles Labour Union, and by my personal name, (Mr. Mike Maria) we therefore salute and commend the courage which you have demonstrated during this very trying period of time that our country is going through.

We pledge our undying commitment support to all of you workers who are striving for personal subsistence, existence and a better Seychelles.

We also salute the business owners who show compassion and understanding towards their employees and corporate to better wages, respect, recognition that equalize to a standing workforce.

This year, we celebrate Labor Day at a time of both change and challenge for the Seychelles.

The pandemic has taught us how we should endeavor in innovation and responsible and value our job.

To overcome what we are facing in the employment sector in Seychelles, Ministry of Employment, labor and Unionist must start working hand in hand to improve the environment working platform and maximally filled the position being vacant in the labor market by reliable and qualified Seychellois.

On the note I would like to congratulate all hard working Seychellois who are dedicated and making sacrifice and delivering 100% to their work.

Thus I would like to encourage Seychellois’ that is not in employment to take the opportunity for job to help and participate in the progress of the economy of Seychelles. 

As we progress to diversify our economy we will require all Seychellois to participate in its development.

Unionist will be there to assist employee and employer to take the right decision and encourage in educating employee and employer of their right, so that there is healthy prosperity and progress in working place. 

For ending I would like to wish all employee and employer a Happy labor Day and all the Seychellois in employment continue to work hard as a nation to build a better Seychelles for our life and for our children and all unemployed I would like to tell you to take the opportunities to assist in building and contributes in the progressing economy of Seychelles. Seychelles required all hands on board to progress and restart, to overcome the pandemic lock down we have gone thru.

Again Happy Labor Day to all Seychellois and be safe from Covid 19
